Water Contamination

We use an average of 9 personal care products (shampoo, toothpaste, etc.) per day and many of the most common chemicals used in these products have now been discovered in our water tables and even in the breast milk of Inuit mothers. Many of these chemicals offer manufacturers inexpensive methods to achieve aesthetic performance objectives: foaming, thickening, coloring and other “look and feel” goals. However, increased awareness of the ways our bodies and the earth’s water tables absorb these agents, is the cause of ever increasing concerns. Here is an example of one such product....

  • Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate (SLS)
    • A cheap, harsh detergent used in shampoos and soaps for its cleansing and foam-building properties
    • Eats away skin protection, causes rashes, infection, and hair loss
    • A study at the University of Georgia Medical College, indicated that SLS penetrates into the eyes as well as the brain, heart, and liver and also indicated signs of long-term retention in the tissues
