The World Water Crisis

In a single generation we have consumed more of the earth’s limited freshwater resources than the combined consumption of every generation that has walked the earth before us.  Our global population has tripled over the past 50 years, resulting in the consumption of more drinking water and a much greater amount of water to produce the food we eat.  However, the 800% increase in water consumption per person in industrialized nations has had a much greater impact on our total global water consumption over the past 50 years.

Over the same period of time, the massive and widespread contamination of our global water reserves has had an even greater impact on our dwindling water tables.  Industrial effluents, pesticides, herbicides, raw sewage, and other toxic “human gifts” are dumped into our water.  Dirty and contaminated water always results in disease and its rapid advent and devastation is shocking.

In 1990, 100,000 cases of cholera were reported.  By 1992, 600,000 cases were reported and today, 250 million people a year are infected by waterborne diseases. An additional 130 million people each year are infected with water-vector diseases; malaria and “sleeping sickness” transmitted by mosquitoes and flies that originate from contaminated water sources.

This massive acceleration in the consumption and contamination of the earth’s finite water resources has rapidly and unexpectedly plunged the world into a full-scale global water crisis.  Today, less that 1% of the earth’s remaining water is contained in easily accessible reservoirs (rivers, lakes, aqueducts) fit for human consumption.  1 billion people lack access to safe drinking water resulting in the needless death of a child every 15 seconds.  Over the next decade, 1 billion people will be added to our global population and 40% of the population (3 billion people) will lack access to safe drinking water.  Water quality and scarcity problems now plague every nation in the world; 40% of the USA is currently experiencing drought conditions and not a single river is safe to drink from in its “natural” state.

Yet in spite of these massive and devastating changes to our freshwater resources, those who make and market water consumption products have hardly changed at all.  Retail shelves are stocked full of products loaded with chemical contaminants and bottled water has become the number one sales item at American grocers.  WaterGeeks was created to empower a new generation of aware consumers with innovative new water consumption and utilization products designed for the world as it is today.  We make products that enable YOU, the consumer, to consume, conserve and preserve more fresh water than the traditional products they replace.  Please click on the buttons below to learn about the dramatic impact upon your health and the health of our planet that can be realized through a few simple product replacements.
